History. Vadstena Castle was originally built by King Gustav I in 1545 as a fortress to protect Stockholm from enemies approaching from the south. The fortress consisted of three smaller stone buildings facing Lake Vättern, three 31-meter wide ramparts, a courtyard, a moat and four circular cannon turrets.

The construction of Vadstena Castle began the year of 1545 on initiative of the king Gustav Vasa. The fortress later evolved to a beautiful renaissance castle, finished the year of 1621. The castle is mainly open summer time, but guided tours and events are held throughout the year.
